Travel Guide
Laos
From the red dust of Vientiane to the $3 pool hotel in Vang Vieng, from the crystal sky of Luang Prabang to Phousi hill. One of the world’s cheapest countries, clean air and friendly people.
In short
Laos is so cheap you’ll keep saying “everything is so cheap here.” One of the world’s poorer countries, yet a paradise for tourists: pool + breakfast + billiard table at a $3 hotel, meals under $1, 20 GB of internet for a few cents.
In Vientiane everything is covered in red dust — sidewalks, cars, shoes. Patuxai (Victory Gate) was built in 1957 in memory of independence fighters against the French. Temples, night market and Buddhist funeral ceremonies (they cremate the dead) are striking.
Vang Vieng is the real surprise: $3 pool + breakfast hotel, $1 motorbike, blue lagoons, caves and slippery-stone springs. The landscape with karst mountains looks like a cartoon.
Luang Prabang is completely different: crystal-clear sky, no exhaust or factories. Royal Palace Museum (shorts and cameras forbidden), Phousi hill climb, night market and UXO Lao visitor centre (80 million unexploded cluster bombs left from the Vietnam War). Trains are Chinese high-speed; much more comfortable than buses and sometimes cheaper.
Route
Main stops from the videos and practical notes.
Capital · red dust · Patuxai
First day pool hotel (billiard table included). SIM 20 GB very cheap. Whole city covered in red dust; even asphalt is coated. Wats, Pha That Luang-style temples, Patuxai Victory Gate (1957). Market: mango ~$0.50, chicken+rice ~$1.50. Night market and Buddhist funeral (prayers + cremation). Went to the wrong terminal and added 25 minutes. Roads dusty, unpaved in places.
$3 hotel · lagoon · cave
Arrival with rain + double rainbow. $3 hotel: pool, breakfast included, billiards, view. Food $1–1.50. Motorbike rental ~$1. Blue lagoon / spring waters (slippery stones, fish), caves (Tham Phu Kham style). Hill climb, viewpoint, market on top. Train to Luang Prabang $5 (cheaper than bus).
Crystal sky · Phousi · UXO
Train station 8 km from city. Tuk-tuk to centre. Air incredibly clean, clouds crystal. Royal Palace Museum (remove shoes, no shorts, no cameras). Night market mostly souvenirs. Morning market: frogs, turtles, insects, mussels… interesting stalls. $5 hotel (billiards, café, free drinks, view, breakfast). Phousi hill climb (paid, needs fitness). UXO Lao centre: 3 million tons of bombs dropped by the US, 80 million unexploded cluster bombs still in the ground.
Train · Friendship Bridge · Thailand
Luang Prabang → Vientiane train $11. Chinese high-speed, 2 hours (bus 8 hours, bad roads). From Vientiane across Friendship Bridge to Thailand. Special treatment for Turkish passports: extra checks, “Turkish” and redirected to another counter. After crossing towards Nong Khai / Bangkok, then Pattaya. Total border crossing very cheap (~$2 level vehicles).
