Travel Guide
Nepal
From Kathmandu’s open-air museum to Pokhara’s lake views, from the Sarangkot viewpoint to Annapurna Base Camp. Himalayan, momo and thin air.
In short
After India, Nepal felt like medicine: clean air, clear mountains, warm people. In Kathmandu Durbar Square, the Kumari Temple and giant trees; in Pokhara Phewa Lake, the Sarangkot viewpoint and Gupteshwor cave (waterfall 80 m underground). Then a 5-day Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek: permit ~3000 ₨ (~21 $), second-hand gear rental ~10 $, night −16 °C, altitude ~4200 m. Momo and dal bhat everywhere; prices rise with altitude. In January you sweat in short sleeves by day and freeze at night.
Route
Main stops and practical notes from the videos.
Open-air museum, Durbar, Kumari
Nights are freezing, days you can walk in short sleeves. 6-bed hostel room with mountain views. Durbar Square is like a work of art; look at the details, the interiors are striking. The Kumari Temple and giant trees complete the old city.
Phewa Lake, backpackers hostel
Bus from Kathmandu ~9 hours (dusty, unpaved stretches). Backpackers hostel with a wide courtyard, 8-bed room. Phewa Lake is stunning; there are boat tours. Motorbike rental is common. Relaxed backpacker atmosphere.
Waterfall 80 m underground
Cameras are banned inside the cave (you pass in silence). Waterfall and cave system 80 metres underground. One of Pokhara’s most interesting natural spots.
Viewpoint, steep climb
Pokhara’s best viewpoint. The path is steep, dusty and rocky; landslides in places, climbing by hand and foot. More than half an hour up. The view of the Himalayas from the top is worth it.
5 days, ~4200 m, −16 °C
Permit from Pokhara Tourism Board: ~3000 ₨ (~21 $) — the “if I die don’t come to my grave” form. Second-hand gear rental (base layers, fleece, boots, gloves, glasses) ~10 $. Nights −16 °C at ~4200 m. Momo and dal bhat prices rise with altitude.
Pokhara → Kathmandu → Bangladesh
Descent from ABC is faster than the climb. In Pokhara 50 momo, dal bhat ~340 ₨. Minibus to Kathmandu ~750 ₨ (~9 hours). Next day airport, Bangladesh visa fee ~60 $.
