At a glance
North Macedonia became my 27th country. The airport is calm; at entry they asked for a return ticket and, although I had none, stamped me through. Skopje is quiet, airy and walkable — wide roads, no traffic jams and often empty benches.
The first thing you notice is the statues: so many that locals joke “10% of the population is statues”. Alexander the Great and his father Philip II salute each other across the square. The Ottoman Stone Bridge, the Turkish bazaar and the Alaca and Kemal Pasha mosques carry the identity of the other side. The fortress is free; the cable car to the iron cross on Vodno Mountain costs $2.
Route
From the airport to Vodno, in order.
Airport, money, SIM
ATM fees are high: most banks charge about $4.5–6.3. Halkbank is cheapest at about $3.6 and the interface is in Turkish. The airport sells a SIM / eSIM valid in Balkan countries (Kosovo, Bosnia, Albania, Montenegro) — sensible instead of buying a separate card in every country.
Statues and Macedonia Gate
Macedonia Gate, built in 2011 for the 20th anniversary of independence, is in the centre. The Alexander the Great statue and the Philip II statue facing it are symbols of the “Skopje 2014” project. Halkbank ads are common on buses and taxis.
An Ottoman legacy
Believed to date from the 15th century, the bridge is 214 m long and 6 m wide with the Vardar River flowing beneath. Usually Macedonians live on one bank and a Muslim / Albanian population on the other. The Turkish bazaar (the old Ottoman market, 14th century) lies across the bridge.
Kofte, Alaca, Kemal Pasha
The bazaar has famous kofte places (there can be a queue at Kozmoz). The same 10 kofte can be found outside the bazaar at half the price. The Alaca Mosque dates from the 1500s and the Kemal Pasha Mosque from the 1400s — important examples of Ottoman architecture. Free drinking-water taps are all over the city.
Free entry
Skopje Fortress is free. The walls rise up to 10 metres; its roots are thought to go back to 400 BC. The view is nice; some parts are neglected, so walk carefully.
Millennium Cross
The mountain is 1,066 m and the cross 66 m, all iron. The walk takes ~1 hour 25 minutes (a path with few signs); the cable car costs about $2 return. The view lays the whole city at your feet. There is a playground and a pavilion next to it.
Bus to Albania
A bus ticket to Tirana (Albania) was bought at the Skopje terminal; the price is about $25.
Transport and accommodation
All prices are approximate US dollars.
